ITINERARY:
The Manu National Park is the most extensive tropical forest Reserve of the planet, with almost two million hectares; located in southeast Peru between the department of Cusco and Madre de Dios, very important part of the Amazonian river basin. In 1977 it was declared by UNESCO: Biosphere Reserve and recognized in 1987 like world patrimony of the Humanity.
The Tambopata Reserve is internationally famous as the site of the world's greatest lowland concentrations of biodiversity as MANU; Tambopata offers an exciting and unique Amazon experience. Of interest two of the most important ecological areas of Tambopata are Sandoval Lake, located within the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, a short distance from the Madre de Dios.
DAY CUSCO – ASUNCION:
The guide, a cook and a driver on a private car pick you up early from the hotel, we begin to travel in a southerly direction for approx. 25 km, and then take east direction toward the valleys that separate us from the typical colonial town of Paucartambo, where we make a brief visit. Then we continue until the pass of "Acjanaco", which is not only the entrance to the park, but also the beginning of the Amazon basin and the last wall of the Andes that we leave behind; from here we begin our descent into the high forests of the park. The forests here have a dramatic change of vegetation through the different ecosystems we pass trough, with possibility to do short walk with our guide.
In the afternoon we arrive to San Pedro focal point for observing birds including the famous Cock of the Rock (Peru’s national bird), endemic on the cloud forest, trogons, the quetzal, toucans, hummingbirds, tanagers, woodpeckers among others; valuable species of oaks, cedars, orchids, more than 600 species of ferns. Then we continue to "Asuncion” lodge (800meters) where we overnight in bungalows with private bathrooms, hot water and dining room with mosquito net where we can eat our dinner and a well-deserved rest.
DAY ASUNCIÓN – “LUPUNA” RESERVE:
This morning we take advantage of the first light with an early breakfast. Then we prepare our luggage’s for another hour journey by road to Pilcopata town, here is possible to use the phone and do some shopping, in the meantime our team prepare a rubber boat, life jackets and paddles to raft the crystalline waters of the “Kosñipata” river that joining the “Tono” and “Piñi Piñi” rivers form the navigable “Madre de Dios” river; after two hour of pleasant rafting we arrive to the port village of Atalaya.
Here we transfer all our belongings to a 16 m. long motorboat, equipped with comfortable seats, and continue another 40 minutes of navigation down to our private reserve located on the left side of the river, where we can find a magnificent forest with trails system for the observation of flora and fauna endemic to the area. Facilities of showers, toilettes and an open dining room are available. After accommodate us we take our first excursion into the surrounding forest, then we return in the evening for a nice dinner. For those interests we have an optional night walk.
DAY “LUPUNA” RESERVE – CENTER OF NATURAL AND TRADITIONAL MEDICINE:
Early in the morning we board the motorized boat and navigate ten minutes to reach a "collpa", a collpa is a wall on the river banks where parrots and macaws provide a bustling and colorful spectacle while lick minerals that are important for their digestion. We come back for breakfast and take again our boat to travel downstream the "Alto Madre de Dios". After four hours we arrive to our destination:
The Center of Natural and Traditional Matsiguenka Medicine. Here we meet Mateo the Matsiguenka healer, an expert on medicinal plants, which in addition to introduce us to his world also for people interested leads nocturnes psycho active ceremonies with plants such as ayahuasca (banisteriopsis caapi). For those seeking contact with the forest and animals, in the afternoon there will be a hike on the interior of the forest, where in absolute silence we can observe a " mammal collpa", special place daily visited by mammals such as the Tapir or Sachavaca (Tapirus terrestris) properties contained in the soil of these collpas are essential diet for most wild vegetarian animals, with a bit of luck we can spot some casual visitors, then we return to our comfortable rooms for dinner.
DAY CENTER OF NATURAL AND TRADITIONAL MEDICINE – BLANQUILLO:
The boat trip continue after breakfast, a couple of hours later we find ourselves in the confluence of the “Manu” River and the “Alto Madre de Dios” rivers, at this point is located the half native half colony village of “Boca Manu”, after a brief visit we continue navigating the powerful “Madre de Dios” River where we can occasionally observe all the inhabitants of this beautiful forest, we will stop for walk towards an oxbow lake called "Blanco" here inhabitant a family of Giant River Otters (pteronura Brasiliensis) , endangered species, which we can observe using a floating catamaran. In the evenings we arrive at the well-known tourist Lodge of “Blanquillo” close to the impressive “Macaws collpa”. Overnight in a nice lodge provided with bathrooms and showers.
DAY BLANQUILLO:
Very early we go into a hide on front of the impressive Macaw Clay Lick; your guide will give you an explanation for the presence of parrots and parakeets here. Gradually dozens of parrots begin to descend to the “collpa” often are hundreds of them. Then followed the most colorful: the macaws (Ara sp.).
After this spectacular 'show' we visit a 45 m. high observation tower, placed on the arms of the giant branches of a “Lupuna tree” (Ceiba pentandra) the biggest tree species throughout the Amazon. Later using a floating catamaran we enter into the “Camungo” oxbow lake, where another family of Giant Otters lives. Overnight in the lodge.
DAY BLANQUILLO – PUERTO MALDONADO:
This day we continue downstream to the mining town “Colorado” where we leave the boat and travel in 4x4 trucks through a rugged road crossing Amazon rivers and potential obstacles on the path, after six hours or so arrive at the city of Puerto Maldonado. Overnight in a hostel of the town.
DAY PUERTO MALDONADO – SANDOVAL LAKE (TAMBOPATA RESERVE):
(Optional flight back to Cusco or Lima).
We will take a boat from the port that will take us down the Madre de Dios River. We need to walk a little more than one hour to the lodge (Mejia Lodge) located close to Sandoval Lake. Here we are gone take place on bungalows At this point we will take a two hour hike through the jungle with a guide. In the afternoon we navigate on a canoe around the Sandoval Lake, where you can see the diversity of flora as well as a great diversity of Fauna; such as otters, ducks, black and white caimans, hoatzins, taricayas (small turtles) and a variety of fishes. We will then return to the lodge for lunch. In the night it is possible to see caimans and the great diversity of wildlife around the Sandoval Lake.
DAY SANDOVAL LAKE – CUSCO OR LIMA:
Very early we return to Puerto Maldonado’s City to take our flight back to Cusco or Lima.
